Eat that Frog

14 Jun

“This books could have easily been titled “Doing Discipline” but I have to admit, I like the title “Eat that Frog”, the metaphor really digs into the well of the procrastinator.

Eat That Frog delivers 21 habits that have been determined invaluable for sucess. Forget the reviewers who feel that these habits could have been condensed, to leave any habit out would be a deterrent to the effectiveness of the program.

This book is a brief easy read but is not intended to be a one time read. Tracy offers bullet points and exercises. They should be repeated on a daily basis.

The concept is that the 21 habits repeated daily can result in behavior change in 21 days. Some behavior “experts” disagree, however, with advanced techniques like NLP and Alpha programming, it is actually possible to reprogram yourself and establish new habits much quicker. But, like all conditioning, it must be repeated or it can be lost. Just like physical exercise.” Amazon.

Mindset

14 Jun

Mindset talks about confidence and success depends on how much we are open to growing from failure and limitations.  The idea is that we are not born into greatness but that we reach greatness by wanting to be challenge and working hard towards a goal. In the end, it is not about the outcome, it is about the effort we put forth.

59 Seconds

19 Apr

For all those who are tired, or simply wary, of the usual self-help formula—homespun anecdotes, upbeat platitudes, over-the-top promises—Richard Wiseman’s “59 Seconds” would seem to be just what the Ph.D. ordered. The idea is appealing: survey the field of academic psychology and mine its research for ways of actually achieving goals, winning friends and finding happiness. Mr. Wiseman, a British professor of “the public understanding of psychology,” read hundreds of studies from every area of the behavioral sciences. He found a promising pattern in many aspects of life, “from mood to memory, persuasion to procrastination, resilience to relationships.” Indeed, he found “a new science of rapid change” able to produce results “in minutes instead of months.”, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704340304574635100237740492.html”

The Art of War

19 Apr

“As advertised, the Art of War is about far more than war. It is about any sort of struggle or confrontation. Taken literally, I can see how the advice would have helped in ancient warfare; taken metaphorically, you can easily apply the techniques to business, politics, or any other place that contention or conflict exists. One of my favorite parts of the Art of War is when Sun Tzu speaks of knowing yourself and knowing your enemy:

So it is said that if you know others and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know others but know yourself, you win one and lose one; if you do not know others and do not know yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.

I’ve found this piece of advice to be vital in a number of different situations. Many people make the mistake of going into competition without understanding their opponents, and worse, sometimes without even knowing themselves. Whenever you’re in a conflict, you must know your own strengths and weaknesses as well as those of your opponent. Sun Tzu’s advice rings true in a great many situations, http://www.nczonline.net/blog/2009/03/01/book-review-the-art-of-war/”
